- CHIHAYABLE ≒ "radical" -

Through the introduction of classes and booklets by Prof. Chihaya Shimomura who has conducted advanced research and classes, we will reflect on the traces of thinking and teaching practices.

- Language of Vision -

This is an introduction to the "Language of Vision" class which was conducted for second graders at the Department of Visual Communication Design at Musashino Art University.

This class was conducted 13 times, traced the source of thought about contemporary Plastic Space, and gave us hints to consider the possibility of new plastic arts in the future.

The worksheets imposed on students as the comprehension questions at the end of each class were unique and interesting attempts.

Class summary (from syllabus):

Focusing on the book "Language of Vision" by George Kepes, we overview how the visual revolution that began in the early 20th century formed our modern concept of space. And then, through understanding the characteristics of various plastic movements and their ideas, we think about what the basis of contemporary design is.

G. Kepes faced the collapse of space expression by visual imitation of the outside world caused by modernization in the early 20th century and the drastic change of living environment, and searched the principle of shaping of a new age based on Mondrian's idea of space composition. G. Kepes created this new principle of plastic art based on the new gestalt psychology of the time. Also, as a principle of representation of the inner world that became the object of new visual expression, he opened the way to the synthesis and organization of visual symbols based on the philosophy of symbols and the symbolic theory of Charles W. Morris.

These two truly creative foresights, which redefine the relationship between humans and vision, are an precious legacy for those who study modern design and plastic art.

Rrole of visual expression and visual image, law of visual organization, perspective and its collapse, principle of space composition and space-time expression, light and texture, and the method of semantic image composition which is used in mecanical photo-montage and psychological collage, will be explained. Through concrete examples, we will consider the organic and integrative principles of plastic images, the human meaning of vision, the role and creation of modern visual language.

In addition, I want you to relive the trajectory of the vision of various plastic movements by worksheet.
